Dejan Savićević turns 60 – the story of Milan's "Il Genio"

On September 15, 2026, Dejan Savićević will turn 60. A perfect occasion to look back at the career of one of the most technically gifted players who dominated Italian football in the 1990s. The Montenegrin became known as “Il Genio” in Italy, and when Savićević hit his peak, it wasn't hard to understand why.

Savićević was born in Titograd, now Podgorica, in 1966. After his breakthrough in his home country, he joined Red Star Belgrade, where he became part of a fantastic team. The highlight came in 1991 when Red Star won the European Cup after a final victory over Marseille.

His performances naturally drew the attention of Europe's biggest clubs to the elegant offensive player, and in 1992, his career continued at AC Milan.

A New Star at AC Milan

Savićević arrived at a Milan team filled with world stars. Fabio Capello had players like Franco Baresi, Paolo Maldini, Alessandro Costacurta, Roberto Donadoni, Demetrio Albertini, Marco van Basten, and Jean-Pierre Papin at his disposal.

Competition was immense, and the rules of the time regarding foreign players did not make life easier for Savićević. Nevertheless, he developed into a prominent figure for the Rossoneri.

His playing style was difficult to categorize. Savićević could operate as an attacking midfielder, a hanging forward, or from the wing. The crucial thing was that he was given the freedom to challenge opponents. He had an excellent left foot, sublime technique, and an ability to create something out of nothing.

During his years in Milan, he helped win three Italian championships and played a decisive role in the club's biggest European triumph of the period.

The Legendary Night Against Barcelona

If one match were to define Dejan Savićević's time at Milan, there is no doubt about the choice.

The Champions League final against Barcelona on May 18, 1994.

Barcelona, with Johan Cruyff as coach, arrived at the final in Athens with a fantastic team. Romário, Hristo Stoichkov, Pep Guardiola, and Ronald Koeman were among the stars of the famous "Dream Team," and many considered Barcelona favorites.

But the final turned into one of the most famous displays of power in Champions League history.

Milan won 4-0.

Daniele Massaro scored the first two goals, Marcel Desailly the last, but the goal still best remembered came from Savićević.

Shortly after halftime, he picked up the ball on the right side and saw that Barcelona's goalkeeper Andoni Zubizarreta was far out of his goal. From a difficult position, Savićević elegantly lifted the ball over the Spaniard and into the far corner.

3-0 to Milan.

A goal that, more than 30 years later, still stands as one of the most iconic in Champions League finals.

Il Genio Turns 60

Savićević left Milan in 1998 after six years at the club. Statistics alone, however, do not tell the story of his significance. He was not the player who necessarily delivered the same performance every single weekend. On the other hand, on his best days, he could do things with a football that very few others could.

It was precisely this unpredictability and genius that made him Il Genio.

In a period when Serie A was the strongest league in the world and gathered some of the planet's best footballers, Dejan Savićević managed to carve out his own place in history.
