40 years ago: Michael Laudrup scored a hat-trick for Juventus in the European Cup

On September 17, 1986, Michael Laudrup wrote another memorable chapter in his impressive career. The Danish football star scored a hat-trick for Juventus as the Italian champions kicked off the season's European Cup with a convincing 7-0 victory over Icelandic side Valur.

Today marks exactly 40 years since Laudrup delivered that grand performance in Turin.

Juventus were naturally heavy favorites against Valur, but the Italian giants left nothing to chance. Michael Laudrup opened the scoring after 19 minutes, and just three minutes later, the Dane found the net again. With two goals in the span of just a few minutes, the stage was set for a European evening that the Icelandic visitors are unlikely to remember with joy.

Laudrup completed his hat-trick in the 65th minute, becoming the undisputed star of the match. Juventus' other goals were scored by Aldo Serena, Antonio Cabrini, Beniamino Vignola, and Massimo Briaschi.

Laudrup on his way to his international breakthrough

At the time, Michael Laudrup was 22 years old and in his second season as a Juventus player after two seasons on loan at Lazio. The young Dane had already shown glimpses of his immense talent, but the competition and expectations at Juventus were on an entirely different level.

Juventus had some of Italian football's biggest stars on their roster, and Laudrup had to perform at a club where it was not just expected that you won – you were expected to do it with style.

That is exactly what he did on that September evening in 1986.

Laudrup was not a classic goalscorer judged solely on his goal tally. He was known primarily for his vision, technique, dribbling, and ability to unlock a defense with a pass that very few others could see. This is precisely why a European hat-trick stands out in the narrative of his career.

Three goals in the same European Cup match underscored that the Dane could do more than just create opportunities for his teammates; he could also decide matches himself.

Juventus won 11-0 on aggregate

After the convincing victory in Turin, any suspense was effectively gone before the return leg in Iceland. Juventus also won the second match, this time 4-0, advancing with an 11-0 aggregate score.

The matches against Valur were the beginning of yet another European campaign for Juventus, but from a Danish perspective, it is Michael Laudrup's hat-trick that remains in memory.

Laudrup spent four seasons as a Juventus player from 1985 to 1989. He won both the Italian championship and the Intercontinental Cup with the club before his career later took him to Lazio and eventually to his greatest triumphs at FC Barcelona and Real Madrid.

His time in Turin was not without challenges, but it helped shape Laudrup as a player. He had to adapt to an Italian football culture with a strong focus on tactics, discipline, and results. At the same time, he played for one of the world's biggest clubs during a period when Serie A was characterized by some of the absolute best players on the planet.

A historic Danish evening in Turin

When looking back at Michael Laudrup's career today, there are many moments to choose from. The European Championship triumph with Denmark in 1992 is missing from his personal CV for obvious reasons, but in return, he experienced enormous success with clubs such as Juventus, FC Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Ajax.

The hat-trick against Valur is rarely mentioned among the absolute greatest Laudrup moments, but the performance deserves to be remembered. After all, it was a Danish player who scored three goals for Juventus in Europe's most prestigious club tournament – and he did it at the age of just 22.

40 years later, the evening stands as a fine testament to Laudrup's unique talent and his importance to Danish football history.

Unfortunately, we do not have the specific Juventus shirt that Michael Laudrup wore against Valur on September 17, 1986. However, you will find many other vintage Juventus football shirts in our selection. Here you can explore classic shirts from the long and traditional history of the Italian giants.

A history that Michael Laudrup truly became a part of 40 years ago with three goals on an unforgettable European night in Turin.
