The Champions League is back – the hunt for Europe's biggest club trophy begins again

The wait is over. The Champions League is back, and on Tuesday, September 8th, the iconic anthem, the grand European nights, and the dream of lifting the most prestigious club trophy in international football will once again resonate.

For decades, the tournament has delivered some of football history's most memorable moments. Incredible comebacks, dramatic overtime goals, legendary finals, and performances that have forever etched players and clubs into the history books. Now a new chapter begins as 36 clubs embark on the hunt for a place in the final at Estadio Metropolitano in Madrid on June 5, 2027.

The Big Story: Can Paris Saint-Germain Do It Again?

The biggest story before the new season revolves around Paris Saint-Germain. The French giant has won the Champions League for two consecutive seasons and can now complete a historic hat-trick.

In 2025, PSG won the club's first Champions League title, defeating Inter a resounding 5-0 in the final. The following year, the French side defended the trophy after a much more dramatic finish. The final against Arsenal ended 1-1 before PSG won the penalty shootout 4-3.

Thus, Luis Enrique's team became only the second club to defend the Champions League trophy in the tournament's modern era. Real Madrid, as is well known, won three seasons in a row from 2016 to 2018, and it is precisely that feat PSG can now replicate.

This makes the French club's pursuit of another triumph the overarching narrative of the season. PSG no longer merely aspires to be among Europe's biggest clubs. They are in the process of creating a European dynasty.

The title defense begins at home against Slovan Bratislava. Later in the league phase, much tougher tasks await against, among others, Barcelona, Manchester City, Roma, and Aston Villa. These are a series of matches that can very quickly show whether PSG remains at the top tier of Europe.

Arsenal Chasing Revenge

Arsenal was just a few kicks away from winning the club's first Champions League title in 2026. The defeat to PSG in Budapest will therefore still sting the English giant, which now has another opportunity to make history.

The London club opens the tournament with a very difficult away match against Napoli. Later, they will face Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, and Real Madrid, among others. In other words, there is not much room for a slow start.

Arsenal also lost the Champions League final to Barcelona in 2006. The club has therefore been close to the biggest European trophy on two occasions without getting their hands on the cup. The big question is whether a third final will one day be the charm.

Clash of Titans from the First Matchday

The Champions League starts with a bang. Already on the first day, Real Madrid and Inter will meet at the Santiago Bernabéu in a match between two of the tournament's most storied clubs.

With its 15 triumphs, Real Madrid is the most successful club in the history of the European Cup and Champions League. Inter has won the tournament three times, and in recent years, the Italians have re-established themselves as a club that can go far in Europe.

The first matchday also features Napoli vs. Arsenal, Liverpool vs. Atlético Madrid, Porto vs. Manchester City, Barcelona vs. Feyenoord, and Bayern Munich vs. Bodø/Glimt, among others. Thus, there are big matches and interesting stories spread across all three matchdays. See the full match schedule at UEFA.

New Clubs Dream of Creating Sensations

The Champions League is not just about Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Barcelona, and the other European giants. The tournament also thrives on smaller clubs getting the opportunity to challenge some of the world's biggest teams.

Azerbaijani Sabah is an excellent example. The club was founded in 2017 and will now play in the Champions League at Old Trafford against Manchester United. Later, they will face Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund, and Arsenal, among others.

Italian Como also faces a historic European season. Como opens at home against Leipzig and later meets Manchester United, PSG, and Barcelona, among others. It will be a tremendous challenge, but also an opportunity to write a new and very special chapter in the club's history.

It is precisely the meeting between the established powers and the unexpected participants that helps make the Champions League special.

How the Champions League Works

The tournament continues with the large league phase, where 36 clubs are gathered in one table. Each team plays eight matches against eight different opponents – four at home and four away.

The top eight clubs advance directly to the round of 16. Teams from ninth to 24th place will play playoff matches for the remaining eight spots, while clubs from 25th to 36th place are eliminated from Europe.

The league phase extends until January 27, 2027. After that, the knockout phase begins, before the last two clubs meet in the final in Madrid on June 5. Read more about the format and all tournament dates at UEFA.
