30 years ago: Arsenal and Chelsea delivered a six-goal thriller at Highbury

On September 4, 1996, Highbury hosted a true London drama as Arsenal and Chelsea clashed in the Premier League. Six goals, a remarkable comeback, and a late equalizer made the match one of those encounters still worth remembering three decades later.

It was also a match from a time when both Arsenal and Chelsea were on the cusp of new eras in their clubs' histories.

Chelsea started flying at Highbury, taking a 2-0 lead after just 15 minutes. It looked early on as if the visitors would take all three points home from North London.

However, Arsenal were far from giving up.

Arsenal came back from 0-2 to win 3-2

The home team fought their way back into the match, first reducing the deficit before truly chasing the equalizer. Arsenal then leveled the score at 2-2 and completed the comeback by taking a 3-2 lead.

From being two goals down, Arsenal suddenly looked set for a remarkable victory over their London rivals.

However, Chelsea had the last word.

Seven minutes before time, Dennis Wise popped up and scored to make it 3-3. Thus, a highly entertaining evening at Highbury ended without a winner.

Six goals and a dramatic match made it an excellent example of English football in the 1990s – and, of course, with the classic shirts from that period, which today evoke memories for many football fans.

A new Arsenal era was coming

The match was played at a very special time in Arsenal's history.

A few days earlier, the club had announced that Arsène Wenger would be the new manager. The Frenchman officially took over later in September 1996, and no one at the time could have known how significant the appointment would be.

Wenger led Arsenal until 2018 and transformed the club both on and off the pitch. Under the Frenchman, Arsenal won three English league titles and seven FA Cup titles, while the 2003/04 season with "The Invincibles" will forever hold a special place in Premier League history.

However, when Arsenal and Chelsea drew 3-3 on September 4, 1996, Wenger had not yet officially taken charge. It was therefore an Arsenal team that was on the verge of a new era.

Chelsea were also heading for new times

It wasn't just Arsenal that was undergoing changes in the mid-1990s. In the years around 1996, Chelsea had brought several big international stars to Stamford Bridge, and the club was slowly establishing itself as a significant force in English football.

Players like Ruud Gullit, Gianluca Vialli, and Gianfranco Zola helped give Chelsea an international profile, while Dennis Wise was among the players who personified the club's English identity during that period.

Wise played more than 400 games for Chelsea and was captain of the club for several years. His equalizer to make it 3-3 at Highbury was therefore just one of many memorable moments in the blue shirt.

A London derby from another era

Arsenal v Chelsea has since evolved into one of the biggest matches in the Premier League. The clubs have battled for championships, cups, and European places, and a long line of world stars have represented the two London rivals over the years.

But the match at Highbury on September 4, 1996, dates from a time when the balance of power in English football looked different.

Highbury no longer exists as a football stadium, Wenger had not yet managed his first Arsenal match, and Chelsea were still several years away from the period when the club truly began to win English championships.

Precisely for this reason, the 3-3 match is a fascinating little piece of Premier League history.

Chelsea led 2-0. Arsenal turned the game around to 3-2. Dennis Wise equalized to make it 3-3.

And a few weeks later, Arsène Wenger officially began one of the most significant managerial chapters in English football history.
